MissionTo prevent and reduce disability and death from heart disease and stroke
Program Description
The Arkansas Department of Health’s Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention Section was established in October of 2000 through a grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The purpose of the grant is to develop and update a State Cardiovascular Health Plan to reduce the burden of disease in Arkansas. The goals of the grant are to:
- Improve heart disease and stroke health
of all Americans
- Reduce disparities
- Delay onset of disease
- Postpone death
- Reduce disabling conditions
Initial steps and activities
include:
- Building infrastructure
- Developing effective strategies (plan)
- Facilitating collaboration
- Identifying culturally appropriate
approaches
- Defining the burden, risk factors
- Developing and updating a comprehensive heart disease and stroke state plan with emphasis on developing heart-healthy policies, changing physical and social environments, and eliminating disparities (e.g., based on geography, gender, race or ethnicity, or income)
